Question by Aarika: OEM Software–Windows XP–some say illegal/won’t work, others say that it’s OK???
I have a refurbished computer that I found at gov’t auction. In great shape, but no O/S with it. Can’t see paying more for the O/S than I did for the ‘puter!

I want Windows XP Home Edition, w/ SP2, Full Version. Best Buy has it for close to 200 bucks. A seemingly respectable (4000 positive feedback comments for it on Yahoo!) direct-buy online store has the same for 85 bucks.

The online store says you’re paying for the packaging at Best Buy, and that their software is the same on the inside…it’s put out by MS for System Builders. Other sources online say that OEM software is illegal, and won’t work properly/have the extras.

If I’m using the computer only for online surfing, letter writing, and school/work, will the OEM version work, or is my best option the pretty-boxed version from Best Buy? Will the OEM require any other knowledge on my part than, plug it in, let it go?

don’t worry i have no licence for any of my 6 computers i i don’t intend buyng, also i have a lot of expensive software with no licence they are all cracked

The air-link is a router – you use your browser to connect to it. (Installing “router software” usually causes more problems that the average user can fix.)

Question by Little Girl: How do I transfer a windows XP word document to a Windows 98 Computer?
The windows 98 laptop doesn’t accept the jump drive I usually use to transport documents, but it does accept Floppy Disks, which my windows XP doesn’t have. I can’t exactly email it to myself because the windows 98 doesn’t have internet access. Is there some way I could transfer the document to the laptop?

Go to the jump drive manufacturer’s site (with a computer with a floppy drive) and download the Windows 98 driver for the jump drive. Install it in the Windows 98 computer.

What’s the difference between a Windows 7 upgrade and an Anytime Upgrade? A Windows 7 upgrade is an upgrade from an older version of Windows, like Windows Vista or Windows XP. The anytime upgrade is an upgrade from one version of Windows 7 to another version of Windows 7. For example, you can use Anytime Upgrade to go from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate. You can see which version of Windows 7 you are running by clicking the Start button, then right-clicking on Comptuer and choosing Properties from the right-click menu or by pressing the Windows key and the Pause key at the same time.

First, don’t get Ultimate – go for professional. Unlike XP and Vista the top versions do not have features that a home user really wants. There are no added goodies you want and performance is the same.

Basically the difference is with Upgrade you must have an existing license for a Windows OS. Since you have XP then you are good to go. The downside is if you have to reinstall it is a little more difficult. Especially if you want to move it to another PC. You can do “clean” install (format your machine and then install through custom install) but takes a few tricks.

Full install doesn’t require an existing O/S but it will let a person upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. There is no direct XP upgrade regardless of the edition you buy.
